Big Tree Wildlife Refuge

It’s not just another house. It’s an experience unlike any. Welcome to your own National Geographic! Big Tree Wildlife Refuge is a private oceanview and rainforest property that sits on the edge of the virgin rainforest where guests are immersed in the energy, sounds, sights, smells and awe of the rainforest and its wildlife – all from within the comforts of our 3 bedroom villa.

Big Tree Wildlife Refuge is located within Gandoca-Manzanillo in Punta Uva on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. The house is 1 km from the turquoise colored waters of the Caribbean Sea where you can enjoy beautiful virgin beaches, snorkeling over the coral reefs, kayaking, wildlife hikes, horseback riding and just plainly relaxing.

Guests at Big Tree Wildlife Refuge are assured to see toucans everyday in addition to several kinds of monkeys, sloths, colorful frogs, hummingbirds, morpho butterflies, countless varieties of birds and exotic insects.

Designed as a vacation house for families and honeymooners, the villa comes fully equipped and can comfortably sleep up to 10 people. There are 3 private bedrooms, each with its own private balcony, large exterior outdoor bathroom and private garden. There is a large outdoor open style full kitchen, dining area, and a wildlife terrace. All bedrooms come fully furnished with linens and pillows, beach and bathroom towels, clothing hangers, ceiling fans, bedside tables and lamps, and comforters for cool nights. There is also a hidden locked safe where you can protect your valuables. Guests rent the entire house – whether you are one or 10 people.

The house is separated into 5 units:

Phenix: the main living / social area includes an oversized professional kitchen, dining table for up to 12, and a comfortable lounge that could accommodate up to 4 additional beds. The social area is very open to the environment, there are few walls.

Kinkajoo: the master bedroom is spacious and bright. Master king size bed, full walk in closet and a bathroom suspended into the primary forest with toilet, bidet, his and hers sinks and his and her double showers.

Las Guatusas: the kid’s bedroom when we live there. It sleeps 6 – 2 bunk beds comprised of 2 twins and 2 full sized beds. The bathroom opens up to the primary forest.

The Macaw: the third guest bedroom with a queen sized bed and private outdoor bathroom.

Los Mapaches: The laundry and utility rooms in the parking area. These areas have restricted access, however we may provide you with access to the laundry room if requested, or we will be happy to do your laundry for you!

All bedrooms are fully screened, secured with digital door locks and come with ceiling fans.

The residence sits on a 9 acre private property with gardens and primary forest. Guests are invited to walk around anywhere and discover as they wish.

Though we are a 10 minute walking distance to the beach down our gravel road, we highly recommend a 4×4 vehicle to get to the property and around town. One can enjoy the property without a car, but most have been happy to have had one ;). Please ask if you have any doubts.

The house is offered with our full time cleaning and gardening staff to help you with any of your needs.

We have also the help of our property management staff avaliable 7 days a week to help with bookings, planning and anything else you might need!

Pets are welcome! The house does already come with a few pets. Currently have 4 cats and one dog, a labrador mastiff mix. All are very friendly and taken care of. We invite you to bring your dog if travelling with.

We are located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica at the very end of the road near the Panamanian border. It is a 4-4.5 hour drive from San Jose, the capital, where the main airport is. It’s a bit of a drive, but certainly worth it! We will be happy to recommend various transportation options including car rental, shuttles, or even white water rafting on the way down or back up!
